FSC Certified Falling Short

May 5th, 2008 · 0 Comments

FSC LogoI’ve been looking into getting some FSC Certified mattress bases / box springs and came across a site that kept me busy for a good 30min.

In case you don’t know, FSC is a standard which promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests. It outsources the FSC accreditation to accreditation bodies.

You can buy FSC lumbar or products made with FSC wood.

Well ww.fsc-watch.org is a group of people, FSC supporters and members among them, who are very concerned about the constant and serious erosion of the FSC’s reliability and thus credibility.

From what I’ve read so far the accreditation is losing face and I thought it deserved more awareness.

Out with the Lux in with ZZZZZZ

April 25th, 2008 · 0 Comments

Mattress SaleThe Lux versions are no more. See that fancy quilted top… we’re giving it the boot.

We finally decided to get rid of the Lux Pillow Top. Everyone loved the look, but aesthetics should be the last thing on your mind when buying a mattress.

Mattress companies love to make a thick luxurious looking mattress because that what sells. The thicker the better right?

Our Lux version added that look and initial luxurious feel but served no purpose after 20 minutes of sleeping on it. The lux actually restricted our mattresses capabilities. For that reason we’ve decided to drop it.

People buy an Essentia because they want the best possible sleep, not because they look good or because they’re natural. ;-)

Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergents

April 24th, 2008 · 1 Comment

detergentChances are you know what that big jug is for.

Now imagine everyone in your neighborhood lining up to poor it in the river. Kinda dumb ay?

I contacted my local big box grocery store about this. In their 20 foot long wall of detergents not one was green. The closest they came to an eco-friendly detergent was President Choice’s concentrated laundry detergent which they considered green because it was concentrated therefore came it a smaller bottle. Need i say more?

I wrote them an e-mail about having alternatives. They never responded.

BTW phosphates are no longer permitted in laundry detergents in the U.S.

Here’s a list of eco-friendly cleaners or visit Mrs Meyers, or Seventh Generation.

Is Memory Foam Safe for a Baby?

April 10th, 2008 · 3 Comments

baby on memory foamMichelle from didn’t leave a city asks…..

“Would you have any information regarding what type of memory foam is used in an infant product designed to elevate and secure an infant from birth to six months in the crib as described in One Step Ahead (can be viewed online), a catalog of baby products? It claims to be safe but I purchased one and the odor is quite strong. I am reluctant to let my newborn sleep on this.
Thank you in advance for your time.”

Answer: Memory foams are made from petroleum based chemicals and a slew of others. The odor, or off-gassing has been a major complaint among many. www.chem-tox.com/guest/guestbook.html

Personally I would not place my infant in any mattress that had an odor let alone a strong chemical odor but i’m a no health professional. ;-)

I would go with a 100% natural latex, rubber or organic cotton mattress with organic fabrics for a baby or one of Essentia’s Bio mattresses for a toddler.

All mattresses sold in the U.S.A are required to pass fire tests.
Chemical fire retardants should be avoided at all costs because they’ve been linked to all kinds of things like SIDS, cancer, learning and memory deficit as well as heart, lung and kidney damage. www.peopleforcleanbeds.org or www.essentiadirect.com/research/fire-retardants. Wools are natural fire retardants and often used in mattresses as fire retardants. Another option would be to get a doctors note which allows you to purchase a mattress without FR.

Read reviews and take your time in choosing a baby mattress because their developing bodies are very delicate.

SC Johnson Greenlist Crock

April 2nd, 2008 · 0 Comments

greenwashing1.jpg A recent study from Nielsen Online calls greenwashing a “failed strategy”

In my case it’s a permanent boycott. ;-) OK …. i’m a little extreme but when a company positions themselves with misleading or greenwash marketing …. you’re on my do-not-support-list.

Well SC Johnson…a family company..lol….welcome to the list.

Their “green list” is a load of crock and i really hope everyone thinks twice about buying their products which include Edge, Off, Raid, Galde, Drano, Pledge, Shout, Fantastik, Scrubbing Bubbles, Windex, Ziploc. Did i miss any? SC Johnson’s “green list” is something they created and it doesn’t set the bar very high at all.

The handful of cleaning and detergent product manufacturers should all get together, raise their prices by 20% and clear up their ingredients. It would be for the greater good so why not? They have so much power yet use it so poorly.

Anyways, if you’re looking for a mass market easily accessible cleaning product check out Green Works by Clorox. They’ve come the closest. If you don’t mind smaller companies check out Seventh Generation or Method.

Find more Greenwashers.

cheers.

Biofuels not Eco Friendly

April 1st, 2008 · 0 Comments

aerial view of rainforestI’m sure most people are aware that BioFuels are not eco friendly. In a frightening Times article titled The Clean Energy Scam it’s clear ethanol is not a sustainable path.

Bio fuels make sense in very small quantities. Big Corp has turned them into Agrofuels, the savior to our oil dependent economies. Non-sustainable liquid gold is running out and their savagery is undeniable and consequences irreversible.

What the Gov and Big Gas Co don’t realize is once we’re all aware of the destruction we’ll refuse to fill up with ethanol, stop buying from business who use it and wont’ buy products made with it. They’re in for a big slap in the face.

Not eating foods that come in boxes is another way you can choose to appose this movement. All these multi ingredient containing man-made foods often include soybean oil which are now used to replace trans-fat. Start eating real food again.

People are more connected and knowledgeable than ever. I thought it was clear we no longer wanted short term solutions.

Latex Mattress or Memory Foam ?

March 26th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Latex Rubber TreeWhat’s better, latex mattress or memory foam mattress? I get this question every day. Here`s the low down.

Lets compare the 2: Latex Mattress vs Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam mattresses are made with petroleum based chemicals. This is not eco-friendly but they offer unmatched pressure relief and blood circulation and you’ll find memory foam mattresses in hospitals across the country because of this.

Qualities and prices vary greatly so choose wisely.

Latex mattresses pretty much last forever and they’re eco-friendly, coming from a renewable resource. Latex is as green as it gets when it comes to mattresses. However, they cannot compete with memory foam in terms of pressure relief but do a pretty good job. Latex mattress tend to hover around the the same price range as better quality memory foam mattress.

If you’re going latex, choose a 100% natural latex mattress. There are plenty of synthetic latexes, blends and partially synthetic latex mattresses on the market so do your research.

Essentia’s Hybrid Latex / Memory Foam Mattress

That’s where our hybrid latex foam comes into play.

We’ve taken 100% all natural latex and through our process managed to achieve memory foam like properties with a better feel. We’re the only manufacturers of this natural memory foam in the world. read more about Essentia’s natural memory foam.

Pretty simple ay, now you’re in the know.

I’ve always been a fan of Jamie Oliver. Thanks to him a make a killer broiled chicken. In the past couple of years he’s really tried to leverage his celebrity for good. In his latest push Jamie set his goals on changing the way we feed our kids at school. Check out the clip, it’s a good one.Modern day food is man made, pre-packaged and disease causing. As Dr. Oz says, anything that has more than 3 ingredients should be scrapped.

Gas Use While Idling - Pollution

March 17th, 2008 · 0 Comments

Los Angeles - The Most Polluted City in the United StatesFACT: Idling for longer than 10 seconds uses more gas than starting your engine.

This is according to the Canadian Office of Energy Efficiency’s Idle-Free Zone & American Society of Mechanical Engineers “Our research showed a V6 restart takes about the same fuel as 5 seconds of idling.”

What’s also interesting is that:
- 10 minutes idling = $0.25.
- 60 minutes/day idling in traffic = $1.50.

Hybrid vehicles turn their engines off when idling. Imagine the impact of this in traffic. I’m not referring to cost, but emissions. The amount of pollution we would prevent would be astronomical….. to the chagrin of Big Gas Co ;-)
